Softball Squad Wins Long Island Title

Written for local town newspapers, appeared in Massapequa Post and Massapequan Observer.

On July 27 the Massapequa International Little League Girls Junior Softball team secured the Long Island Section 6 Title after twice defeating the East Meadow team, following through on an undefeated season.

All seven innings were pitched by Lauren Cetin, who held off any East Meadow runs until top of the 7th inning. Ashley Coggins, Amanda Stashin and Emily Gaeta made key hits, which gave Massapequa a 3-0 lead.

In the thrilling final out, Erin Leahy caught the final out for East Meadow by the stitches of her glove, locking the score in at 3-2 and giving Massapequa the win.

The team is now off to play for the New York State title at Chatham, NY. The girls twice defeated last year’s state champions Bellmore-Merrick for the District 31 Title earlier this month—a positive sign for the team as they prepare to take home the state title.

If the girls keep up the winning streak, they might soon be traveling to Kirkland, WA to compete for the Little League World Series.
